Relevant Fees

  • Commercial Business License Application Fee: $85
  • Late Renewal Fee: $25 (after 30 days late)

To obtain a Commercial Business License, please complete each step below:

Step 1: Find a Location & Verify Zoning
Before proceeding with your business idea, you should verify your business will fully comply with all land use and zoning ordinances at the desired location in West Point. Contact the City's Planning Department with any questions about land use and zoning at 801-776-0970 or planning@westpointcity.org.

Step 2: Register Your Business Name with the State of Utah
Register your business name with the Utah Department of Commerce once you have secured a physical location for your business. Click here to register your business using the state’s OneStop Business Registration tool. This tool allows you to register with the Utah State Tax Commission and the Utah Department of Workforce Services in addition to registering your business name with the Utah Department of Commerce. This registration alone does not authorize you to conduct business in West Point. If you have questions, please contact the Utah Department of Commerce at 801-530-4849.

Step 3: Register Your Business with the Utah State Tax Commission
Most businesses selling goods and products, or providing select services, must be registered with the Utah State Tax Commission (Sales and Use Tax Account) and have West Point listed as an outlet location under their state sales tax ID number. Businesses must provide their assigned state sales tax ID number (when applicable) when submitting a West Point City business license application below. Business license applications will not be processed if this number is not provided and the business's West Point City location is not listed as an outlet location. If you have questions, please contact the Utah State Tax Commission at 801-297-2200.

Step 4: Obtain Building Permits & Pass Required Inspections
Obtain all relevant building permits and pass all required inspections. All new construction requires building permits, building inspections, and fire inspections. Anything beyond paint and carpet in existing buildings likely requires building permits and inspections. Contact the West Point City Building Department with any questions at 801-776-0970 or building@westpointcity.org. All inspections must be passed before a business license can be issued. For new construction, a Certificate of Occupancy must be issued before a West Point City business license can be issued.

Step 5: Obtain All Relevant County, State & Federal Licenses, Permits & Inspections
Obtain all county, state and federal licenses and permits that are required for your business type and pass any required inspections. Businesses are entirely responsible for ensuring they are 1) aware of and 2) have received all required licenses and permits. You must upload proof you have received all required county, state and federal licenses or permits when submitting your West Point City business license application. Here are a few links to resources that may be helpful, though this list is not exhaustive:

Step 6: Apply for a West Point City Business License
Once the above steps are complete, you can submit the commercial business license application. If you submit the application before completing the steps above, please keep in mind it will be kept on hold until they are complete. This includes 1) passing required inspections and receiving occupancy approval from the West Point City Building Department and 2) receiving all relevant county, state and federal licenses or permits. You can apply for a business license using the link below. Invoices will be emailed to the email address provided on the application. Once you have received your business license, you are approved to open for business.

We hope you find great success doing business in West Point!
